Final Film-Conclusion of Project.

Wednesday, 8 June 2011

Milton Keynes Gallery

My work was exhibited at Milton Keynes gallery through contact at my college it was selected as one of several films that were part of a dream sequence installation. My film was consequently projected onto the ceiling of the gallery for the viewer to lie and watch.

Continued Video Editing

I spent most of my day today working on my video more, trying to incorporate more of the filming and the footage that I have. This has been a bit hit and miss because i am experimenting mainly and obviously not all that you try actually creates an image that you are happy with. I have found that the main issue that I have had is to create a film that seems like a whole. because the footage that I have is very stylistically different with different shapes and patterns its fairly hard to integrate that into the work.

Here is an example of where I have tried something that has not been entirely successful. This sequence didn't really fit in with the rest of the film I tried to change the colour balance contrast and brightness of the footage as well as layering them and as much as I didn't hate the effect I struggled to attain a seamless progression.

Another thing that I am particularly concerned about is the nature of the film, I want it to be played on a loop, however I don't want the film to visibly start and slop again or break, here is my first attempt at a sequence that might link the beginning and end effectively. I dont think that i will use this

The day was not completely made up of failings though, here I tried more layering and I really liked the negative effect on the 'liquid' film that was produced. As well as generating a more interesting aesthetic considering this section of the film was relatively lengthy.

Show Build

It was the first day of the show build today for the final exhibition the film is pretty much done now. Te only complication is that I havent yet projected the 16mm film reel over the digitl projection so im not exactly sure if tat will look as i'd hoped. Luke Williams, the tutor who has allowed me to use his projector for the show has assured me that it would look fine over the top an that the liht from the projector would just bleach out the film behind it a little. This is fine though as the 16mm film is intentionally meant to block out and distract from the film playing beneath it. It represents social constructs that distract us from the beauty around us it think when people are watching the film that they will initially get taken in by the shapes and patterns but hoopefully some will be abe to think beyond the surface to what is really there. Even the audio from the piece will be somewhat distorted by the mechanical whirring of the analogue projector this sense of overpowering the film and restricting what the person viewing can make out is important because as the film goes on I hope that people will bein to question the layers and what lies beneath.

Projecting the Final Film

Photo studio.

This room definitely wont be available to use for the show however it is pretty much one of the darkest spaces around college so it was perfect to use to finally see what the film looked like as a projecton rather than an image that is 15x15cm on a Mac screen. I was worries that the introduction might look very pixelated because the images that I originally scanned in were no more than 2x1cm each. I was pleased with the way the film looked though so this wasnt really an issue in the end.

I'm glad i finally got round to trying to project my film, it has given me a better idea of the space I would need which is important because of the way the show is being put together for the first time in a new building, no one is really sure how it will fit together. The more information I can provide the better really this is so I can anticipate what the size of the allocate space will mean for my exhibited work and try to pre-empt the shortfalls.

Here are some of the measurements involved, I hope i'm able to use Graham's room because it isnt down on the plan yet as space to be used as exhibition space which means that it is free for use. It already has two projectors in there already and its quite isolated really. If not it was still a usefull excersize, the main problem I am going to have will be makin sure that both films overlap each other without any excess either side because as you can see from the pictures above the digital projection is widescreen whereas the 16mm prjection is pretty much square.

First Day of Editing

First day of editing, this was not as successful as I had imagined it might be. Basically I had quite a lot to work with in terms of what I could use for the film so I guess I just have to be more selective next time. I also found that making a cohesive progressive body of work was difficult when I hadn't thought about the sequence of the film in terms of an over arching ideal plan or concept.

What I tried to do today was use the film photographs that had a light leak and that I used a prism to take photographs through as frames for my film, this was done by scanning in the photos and cropping the area that wanted. Then importing the scanned in images into Adobe Premier. when they were in there I found they were really pixelated because they were obviously such a small scale when they were initially scanned in. At first i was extremely unhappy it looked like a tacky slideshow especially as when the files were imported they were not in any relevant order so there was no flow to the frames. However

-did not go well..tried to make a mock up film which did not work very well too pixelated wast fast enough needed way more frames really

-i'm kinda just behind schedule on making i should have started to edit clips earlier than i didi should have left myself a little more time as stuff with computers always takes the piss.

[First example of animating the photographs]

As you can see the first half of this example is where I have tried to smooth out the jerky disjointed movement between frames.

[Second example incorporating stop motion animations]

Untitled from Gypseh on Vimeo.

Here you can see the transitions and work that i did with the photos looks much more sophisticated and not just like a slideshow of images. I used this as a backround because it is fairly neutral and tried to incorporate the stop animation that I did usin the OHP projector. Im not sure how successful this really is i prefered the film without the rawn animation really it was aesthetically much weaker than simply havin the background as the main focus in this example anyway. I am sure however with reater knowledge of the editing program that it could look much better, I'm just not sure that it would be worth focussing my time in that area at the moment.

[Example Three Monochrome through to colour]

Probably the most successful example of work today, I think that this works well really and I'm certain that this is going to be the introduction to the film that im producing. I am always concerned about the finish and quality of work that im producing but I feel okay about this as an introduction because it is fairly subtle and the problem with my thoughts at the moment is knowing what to leave out because i have quite a lot of options really. So its really a case of being selective really and not over producing it, i guess its the same problem you face with most work..knowing when to stop.
