Already unwittingly almost week into the project now, the project is somewhat ambitious mainly because my level of initial knowledge and experience is not too high, however it deals with themes that I am really interested in so either way it will be a learning curve for me.
I am hoping to explore how sounds connect each of us to the universe making existence itself more tangible. Our senses and bodies are only capable of experiencing the world on one level, there are light and sound frequencies that are far beyond our comprehension. Sounds are particularly interesting to me because sounds are consuming, far more so than visual media, sounds can affect a fetus in the womb and arguably incite emotion more powerfully than optical methods alone. I have very few ideas at the moment of how the final product will be realised, the most important thing for me to do is to get a better scope on methods that have been used and the technology that is available so that i can conclude viable means of expressing my ideas .
I have been reading a book called 'Visual Music' which has been really interesting so far, it basically takes you chronologically through the 20th century discussing artists that have tried to create a fusion between the visual arts and music. It discusses how advancements in technology have allowed more and more the ideas and dreams of earlier artists to be actualised. Moving forward from static works that were predominantly paintings into using purely light as a medium. The problem with reading a book about such works is that only still images are available to you so I found some of the videos and animations online, John Whitney's animation 'Lapis' I found particularly thought provoking:
I loved the way that you see the movement as a whole, a collective, as well as seeing each individual particle of light moving. The seamless movement is harmonious there is a real connection with nature here the symbiosis of movement for me it is somewhat ideal it represents what humanity should aspire to, moving away from our 'individualist' culture and toward community if only people could achieve such things. I love how you are almost hypnotised by the motion and I personally began to get pulled further and further into the images seeing waves and different forms. Considering this piece in regards to my own work it would be difficult to create something like this in the same manner because of the techniques that were used, sounds were written directly onto the film soundtrack using self built machinery that were carefully calibrated. It was interesting to see how the work of the Whitney brothers moved into film with Alfred Hitchcock using them for his opening sequence to the 1958 motion picture Vertigo:
The main thing for me is to try and find practical applications for ideas so that I can work on them and make it more sophisticated so for my own work have some some clear 16mm film

when you mark or draw on the film and play it back through a projector an image and sound are created so I plan to experiment with this and see what happens really.
